Appeal against the intended closure of a history institute in Austria on purely administrative grounds
The Board of Directors of the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft (LBG) decided to close the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for European History and Public Spheres (LBI EHP) in Vienna in May 2013. The management of the LBG communicated this decision to the institute in an e-mail statement of 12 October 2011, stating that it was made “based on structural and strategic reasons and does not refer to the academic work of the institute”. Neither professional nor budgetary explanations were given as grounds for the closure.
Considerable public funds are committed to fund the LBG. We appeal to the Austrian Minister for Science and Research and to the LBG’s Board of Directors to put the scientific criterion before administrative convenience. We appeal to the Board of Directors to revise this decision.
