Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for European History and Public Spheres
The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for European History and Public Spheres was founded in June 2005. It conducts innovative multimedia research about European core topics of the 20th and 21st century and makes them accessible for a broad public. The center of its research constitute the four research fields - "Holocaust and Communism Remembrance", "Political Iconography and European Pictorial Memory", "Cold War and European Public Spheres" and "Migration and Memory".
Founder and first director of the institute from 2005 to 2008 was Oliver Rathkolb, since 1 March 2008 professor at the institute for contemporary history at the University of Vienna.
The headquarters of the new Ludwig Boltzmann Institute is based in Vienna with the institute’s director Thomas Lindenberger. A permanent research outpost is at the Malmö University.
